King’s College London Profile

King’s College London was founded in 1829 and is now rated as one of the top 25 universities in the world. Geography is one of the oldest disciplines taught in the College. The current Geography department now occupies stunningly refurbished accommodation in the King’s building on the Strand. It is one of the largest Geography departments in the country, recruiting approximately 130 undergraduate students each year who can study either human, physical and development geography or a mix of all three. The department has the UK’s largest taught masters programme with approximately 15 separate programmes recruiting over 175 students a year. The programmes range across the spectrum of geography but there is an increasing focus on environmental and urban issues which are taught both from a human and physical geography point of view. The Department also has nearly 100 postgraduate research students studying for a PhD.

The Department is research led and has attracted approximately £2 million a year in recent years from UK Research Councils and other funders. This research cuts across the Department’s interests which are organised into four research groups:

The Department has recently appointed Professor Paul Ekins who, amongst other activities, runs the UK Energy Model and is the Director of the King’s Institute for Urban Sustainability. We have other research strengths in urban climatology, water and remote sensing. Professor Tony Allan was this year’s winner of the Stockholm Water Prize.

Professor Richard Webber is one of the distinguished Visiting Professors in the Department and we are proud to be associated with the Names database. For further details please consult our website www.kcl.ac.uk/geography or contact the Head of Department Professor Tim Butler tim.butler@kcl.ac.uk.
